How To Stop Apps From Updating Automatically On Samsung Galaxy S4

  1. Sammy3007's Avatar

Hi there, I am waiting for the Kitkat. I have some apps which are not updated though they have updates available. If I get kitkat, will it automatically update those apps that l have left out..? Because, my internal memory is low and if these apps get updated, there is a possibility that kitkat update may end up in failure due to lack of memory. Shall l uninstall those apps? Help me out.

You shouldn't need to uninstall any of the apps in question. You can easily set this behavior in the Play Store app itself, though:

    Play Store > Settings > Auto-update apps > Do not auto-update apps

You should be able to set this before you accept the update, but once your phone has updated and rebooted I would immediately open the Play Store and double-check. You might also want to check that the "Auto-add widgets" setting is how you want it.

If your internal storage is too low to update certain apps, how do you expect to have enough space for the full OTA update? If it were me, I'd try to make sure I have at least 1GB available prior to updating. Sure, you may not *need* that much free space, and granted, the update will download to the /cache partition (which isn't part of the usable internal storage), but you could definitely run into issues during install if the device's storage maxes out...I wouldn't take any chances. If you're down to the point where apps can't be updated, I definitely wouldn't install an OS update.

I have enough memory for the OTA update. But the point is 'no wifi connection' here. I would update the KitKat by 3G mobile network. The browsing package has 800MB left out. I hope it is enough to update KitKat. But I am afraid when the OTA in progress, the old apps might be updated automatically. This will need more data to complete the update.

I follow you...I think. I have seen that the "official" recommendation from Samsung is to have at least 1GB free space...so take that info as you will. The short answer to your question is that no, it should not automatically update any apps as far as I'm aware.
